What is the difference between 2205 duplex and 316L?
What are 316l and 2205 Stainless Steel?
316L stainless steel. Ultra-low carbon steel with good resistance to sensitized intergranular corrosion, suitable for manufacturing thick section welded parts and equipment, such as corrosion-resistant materials in petrochemical equipment.
2205 stainless steel alloy is a duplex stainless steel composed of 22% chromium, 2.5% molybdenum and 4.5% nickel-nitrogen alloy. It has high strength, good impact toughness and good overall and local stress corrosion resistance.
Difference for 2205 duplex and 316L
Among stainless steel materials, duplex 2205 and 316L are widely used in many fields due to their unique properties.
Below, Walmay Metal will analyze the differences between these two materials in detail.
Chemical Composition Difference of 2205 steel and 316L ss?
UNS | C | Mn | P | S | Si | Mo | Cr | Ni |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
316L | 0.030 | ≤2.00 | ≤0.045 | ≤0.030 | ≤1.00 | 2.00~3.00 | 16.00~18.00 | 10.00~14.00 |
2205 | 0.030 | ≤2.00 | ≤0.04 | ≤0.030 | ≤1.00 | 2.5~3.5 | 21.0~24.0 | 4.5~6.5 |
2205 duplex stainless steel contains approximately 50% ferrite and austenite respectively. This duplex structure gives it excellent strength and corrosion resistance.
SS 316L is an austenitic stainless steel with a lower carbon content to improve welding performance and molybdenum added to enhance corrosion resistance.
Comparison of mechanical properties for 2205 stainless and 316L ss material?
mechanical property | 2205 Duplex | 316L |
Stretching strength Rp0.2/MPa | ≥450 | ≥180 |
Tensile strength Rm/MPa | ≥620 | ≥485 |
ElongationA/% | ≥18 | ≥40 |
HBW | – | ≤217 |
HRB | – | ≤95 |
HV | ≤320 | ≤220 |
Due to its duplex structure, the yield strength of duplex stainless steel 2205 is more than double that of 316L stainless steel.
It also has sufficient plasticity and toughness required for forming, making it perform well when subjected to heavy loads.
Although 316L steel has lower strength, its good plasticity and toughness make it more advantageous in forming and processing.
Corrosion Resistance Comparison
Due to the duplex structure of 2205, it exhibits superior corrosion resistance to 316Lss in certain corrosive environments, especially in chloride environments.
2205 duplex stainless steel is resistant to stress corrosion cracking, especially in marine environments containing chloride ions. Stress corrosion is a prominent problem that austenitic stainless steels, including 316L stainless steel, are difficult to solve.
In many media, the corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel is better than that of ordinary 316L stainless steel, because duplex stainless steel has extremely high corrosion resistance, such as acetic acid, formic acid, etc. It can even replace austenitic stainless steel and even corrosion-resistant alloys.
And aisi 316L material performs well in general corrosive environments, especially in acidic environments.
Different Application Areas of 2205 steel and aisi 316L
Duplex stainless steel 2205 is often used in marine environments, petrochemicals and other places that require high strength and corrosion resistance; as well as places that require medium strength, such as in the automotive and construction industries.
316L is widely used in food processing, medical equipment, and chemical industries, especially in places that require good welding performance and corrosion resistance.
At the same time, due to the higher strength of 316L stainless steel, it is widely used in many important application areas, such as chemical, marine and medical equipment.
Cost Difference in stainless steel 2205 and 316l
From the perspective of raw material prices, duplex stainless steel 2205 is usually more expensive than 316L stainless steel price.
Because the chemical composition of duplex stainless steel 2205 is more complex and contains higher nitrogen, while 316L stainless steel contains higher nickel. The role of nitrogen in stainless steel is to improve strength and corrosion resistance, so duplex stainless steel 2205 has certain advantages in performance.
Conclusion
In general, ss 2205 material and aisi 316l material each have their advantages, and the choice of which material depends on the specific application scenario and cost budget.
In terms of cost, stainless steel 2205 duplex is usually more expensive than 316L stainless steel, but considering its excellent performance and long-term use cost, sometimes duplex stainless steel 2205 has a higher cost performance.
In terms of material strength, application field, and corrosion resistance, 316L stainless steel is stronger than 2205 stainless steel.
Both stainless steels have their unique application scenarios and advantages, and the choice of which material should be determined according to specific needs and use environment.
