India Delays Strict Stainless Steel Certification Rules Until October
India has pushed back its tough new BIS certification requirements for stainless steel imports to mid-October, giving exporters some much-needed breathing room.
The Rule Change That Could Have Shaken Up Trade
India was set to implement strict new certification rules on June 16 that would have required:
Full supply chain certification (not just final products)
Every material used in production to meet BIS standards
Complete documentation of all manufacturing inputs
Many saw these rules as targeting Chinese stainless steel exports specifically, potentially blocking traditional trade routes through Southeast Asia.
What's Changed Now
The Indian Steel Ministry announced on July 7 that:
The rules won’t take effect until October 15
Goods already in transit or under contract can clear customs without certification
Raw materials temporarily won’t need BIS approval
The certification process will be streamlined (may take as little as 4 months)
Understanding BIS Certification
The standard certification process involves:
Document preparation
Application submission
BIS audit
Sample testing
License approval
Different stainless steel products have specific Indian Standard (IS) codes:
IS 6911: Stainless steel plates/sheets
IS 6912: Stainless steel wire
IS 2508: Cold-rolled stainless steel strip
IS 11850: Stainless steel pipe fittings
At Walmay Steel, we’re closely monitoring these regulatory changes to ensure our customers have the most up-to-date information for their stainless steel trading decisions.
